Martin Lee meets top US Rights Official
Democracy, civil liberties and the rule of law were discussed at a breakfast
meeting today between Democratic Party Chairman Martin Lee and Assistant
Secretary of State for Democracy and Human Rights John Shattuck, the most
senior US official to visit Hong Kong since the handover.
Mr. Lee termed his fifth meeting in recent years with Mr. Shattuck as
friendly and useful, commenting: "Clearly, Mr. Shattuck is informed
and concerned about the situation in Hong Kong. I explained that the May
1998 electoral laws are neither fair nor democratic and that we in Hong
Kong have particular concern about the future of civil liberties and the
rule of law."
