The Democratic Party Responds to Provisional Legislature's Law Amendments
The Democratic Party, the largest party in the Legislative Council,
today responded to the Provisional Legislature's passage of amendments
to two key Hong Kong laws, the Societies Ordinance and the Public Order
Ordinance.
Party Chairman Martin Lee said:
"This is a clear sign of things to come. These changes to our laws
represent a step backwards for freedom and will revive colonial restrictions
on the exercise of basic rights, including association and demonstration.
In particular, the introduction of the concept of "national security"
leaves the laws open to interpretation and to political censorship.
Laws must not take away rights from the people of Hong Kong -- but rather
must protect individual rights and freedoms."
