to Asian Economic Crisis
On October 15-17, Martin Lee will attend a conference on political responses
to Asia's economic crisis in Bangkok. The conference is organized by the
Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats and the Thailand Democrat Party.
While in Bangkok, Mr. Lee will also meet with senior Thai government officials

The Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD) is a forum of liberal
and democratic parties and organizations founded in 1993. Martin Lee will
participate in a panel on the global and regional implications of the Asian
crisis, chaired by Thailand Foreign Minister Surin Pitsuwan, and chair
a second panel on political reforms.
Commenting on the purpose of the conference before departing for Bangkok,
Martin Lee said:
This conference brings together Asian democrats at an important time
in Asia's political development. There is a new consensus on the need
for democratic reforms throughout the region. I look forward to working
with the conference participants to identify ways to accelerate and institutionalize
