Eric Wong Chung-ki

Eric Wong is one of Hong Kong's leading young activists and grassroots community leaders who holds elected posts in at both the District Board and the Urban Council levels. He is an elected representative and Chairman of the Sham Shui Po District Board, and was the youngest individual to hold the post of District Board Chairman. He has been an elected Urban Councillor from 1995 through the present.

Education and Background:

Born in Hong Kong in 1965, Eric Wong graduated from Shue Yan College with a diploma in Sociology, where he was the Chairman of the Student Union. He later earned a graduate degree in Management of Community Service from the University of Wales.

Political Career:

Mr. Wong has a long involvement in Hong Kong's political affairs. He was the Executive Director of Hong Kong Association for Democracy and People's Livelihood and the President of Sham Shui Po Residents' Concern Group.

Eric Wong was elected to the chairmanship of the Sham Shui Po District Board from October 1994, a post he occupied until June 30, 1997, when a number of pro-Beijing appointees were added to tilt the balance of power against the elected District Board members. In March 1995, he was elected as an Urban Councillor. He joined the Democratic Party in July 1997.

Community Service:

Mr. Wong is active in community affairs and social service to the society. He holds a number of community posts, including membership of the Sham Shui Po Central Area Committee and the Sham Shui Po District Fight Crime Committee. In the Urban Council, he is the Chairman of the Working Group on the Control of Illegal Hawking, the Vice-Chairman of Finance Select Committee and a member of 7 other key committees.

Personal:

Eric Wong is married and has lived in Sham Shui Po since he was born.
