Tsang Kin-shing

Widely known by his nickname as the "Bull," Tsang Kin-shing is a leading figure in Hong Kong's fight to advance democracy and human rights in the territory. Mr. Tsang is a core member of the Democratic Party - Hong Kong's largest and most popular political party - and is highly respected as a fearless, tenacious, and hard-working leader of the people.

Education and background:

Tsang Kin-shing was born in Hong Kong and completed his secondary level of education there. Though raised in economically poor circumstances, Tsang Kin-shing has advanced to the highest tier of elected leadership in Hong Kong. Mr. Tsang and his four siblings grew up in a living space that measured only six by 12 feet; the family of seven lived there for 20 years. After leaving school, Tsang Kin-shing ultimately entered the construction field and worked on building projects for several years.

The Tiananmen Square Crackdown in 1989 gave Mr. Tsang the impetus to enter politics -- it was then that he realized he had an obligation to fight for democracy and human rights. He is a committee member of both the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China and the Joint Association of People's Organizations for Promotion of Democracy.

Political Career:

Tsang Kin-shing has served as an elected official for almost a decade. In 1991, he was elected to the Eastern District Board. Four years later, he was voted into the Legislative Council, representing the Primary Production, Power and Construction functional constituency, one of the most prominent groups in the legislature. During his term, he was well-known as a champion of labor issues.

Mr. Tsang is the chairman of the Democratic Forum. He is the Democratic Party deputy spokesperson for Urban Planning, Manpower and Transport. In the May 1998 legislative elections, he will stand again to represent voters on Hong Kong Island.

Personal:

Mr. Tsang is married and has two children. He lives in Chai Wan.
